What Is God? Does God Relate to Humankind?

These are some of the oldest and most profound human questions. The theology major looks for answers by drawing on the 800-year-old 91鶹ӳý tradition of religious study as a disciplined and demanding search for truth. In small classes, you’ll work side-by-side with talented faculty who will challenge you intellectually and guide you thoughtfully through your own search for understanding. You’ll examine Catholic and Christian beliefs within the context of the world’s richly varied religious and cultural traditions. You’ll expand your awareness of social, ethical and moral issues, and learn to write, think critically and analyze problems at a whole new level. This is a powerful and compelling course of study.

My journey at 91鶹ӳý was just amazing. I was fortunate enough to receive a scholarship from the university, and it inspired me to achieve a level of academic success that I never thought possible. Now I want to give something back as a pastor.”

More Ways to Learn, On Campus and Beyond

Practical experience is built into the theology curriculum. You’ll have many opportunities to combine academic study with compassionate service to people in need, in the Chicago area and around the world. You might complete an internship with an organization that serves homeless youth, or assist a congregation, or both. The university partners with , a national organization which brings together young people of different religious and moral traditions for service and dialogue around shared values. We especially encourage you to take advantage of 91鶹ӳý’s outstanding study abroad program. You’ll have your choice of programs on four continents.

Show Your Stuff

Undergraduate research and creative expression is a 91鶹ӳý trademark. Theology—with its focus on the deeper unity underlying all reality—is a rich source of topics for such expression. We actively encourage our students to develop their own original research and creative projects. You’ll enjoy full faculty support and get a chance to present your work at a campus expo in April. You can even apply for university grant funding. The Undergraduate Research, Scholarship and Creative Investigations Program (URSCI) also will fund your travel to academic and professional conferences across the U.S. Your faculty mentors will watch for opportunities that are perfect for you.
